What are Bitcoins?

Bitcoins are a digital currency with a fixed supply of 21 million. Each Bitcoin is produced through a process that requires significant computer processing power and energy. They were created in response to the 2008 banking crisis as a form of money independent of the banking system, designed to appreciate over the long term in response to governments devaluing national currencies through inflationary money printing.

They were created by Satoshi Nakamoto (not his real name), who chose to remain anonymous, prioritizing the innovation over personal recognition. The Bitcoin network is designed to be decentralized, ensuring that no single person or organisation has control over it. It is an error-free and autonomous financial system that continues to grow in popularity and value.

Bitcoins represent a groundbreaking technological advancement. Traditionally, digital content such as films or music could be infinitely copied and shared across the internet. However, Bitcoin introduces a novel technology called Blockchain, which, for the first time, enables the creation of digital assets that cannot be replicated. These assets can be transferred from one person to another over the internet without the need for a middleman or central party, revolutionizing the way value is exchanged digitally.

Why is the Bitcoin price rising?

As shown in the chart above, despite the peaks and troughs, the Bitcoin price has been rising. This is because there is a limited supply: only 21 million Bitcoins will ever be created. Initially in 2009, 50 Bitcoins were created every 10 minutes. The rate at which new Bitcoins are created halves every four years until all 21 million Bitcoins have been generated.

These "halving" events have historically coincided with Bitcoin setting new price records, often around 400% higher than the previous high. This surge is believed to be in direct response to the dwindling supply. We believe that the price of Bitcoin will continue to rise over the next decade, driven by its limited supply and increasing demand from individuals, investment firms, and corporate treasuries.
